Fiscal Year 1999 FDA Performance
Plan Announced.
The United States food supply is the safest in the world, yet increasing numbers of
reported foodborne illnesses (See the Acupuncture Whistleblower) threaten citizen health.
Thousands of deaths and millions of foodborne (could be uncooked imported herbs)
illnesses occur each year due to a litany of reasons. For example absence of
knowledge about safe food handling practices, physiological changes in microorganisms,
changes in our food supply and its distributions, previously harmless microbes developing
resistance to traditional medical care and even juvenile tobacco smoking are just some of
the issues which will be addressed by FDA.
The big five (5) strategic objectives follow:
- Assure food and drug safety by increasing the effectiveness of science-based regulation
(back to pre-1993 bills & laws this examiner authored).
- Accelerate private-sector development of new drugs, biologics, therapies, and medical
technology.
- Reduce tobacco use, especially among youth.
- Improve the diet and level of physical activity of Americans and
- Promote the appropriate use of effective health services.
The USFDA Mission follows:
- to promote the public health by promptly and efficiently reviewing clinical research and
taking appropriate action on the marketing or regulated products in a timely manner;
- With respect to such products, protect the public health by ensuring that; foods are safe, wholesome; sanitary, and
properly labeled; human and veterinary drugs are safe
and effective;
there is reasonable
assurance of the safety and effectiveness of devices intended for human use;
safe cosmetics
& properly labeled, and; public health and safety are protected
from electronic product radiation.
- Participate through appropriate processes with representatives of other countries to
reduce the burden of regulation, harmonize regulatory requirements, and achieve
appropriate reciprocal arrangements; and
- As determined to be appropriate by the Secretary, carry out paragraphs (1) through (3)
in consultation with experts in science, medicine, and public health,and in cooperation
with consumers, users, manufacturers, importers, packers, distributors and retailers of
regulated products.
